Draw the control and data architecture

For each interface, identify protocol, network owner, message direction, expected response time and the party responsible for changes.

Define identity and destination ownership

Agree which identifier follows a parcel through the system and how duplicate, unreadable or multiple labels are handled. State which system decides the destination and when that decision becomes final.

Define what happens when the destination is unknown, closed or full. Exception routing should be deterministic and visible to operators.

Control message timing and state

Document when routing data must be available relative to induction and discharge. Define acknowledgements, retries, timeouts and behavior during temporary communication loss.

Map physical parcel state to software state. Operators need a clear way to reconcile a parcel that was inducted, recirculated, manually removed or sent to an exception lane.

Design diagnostics for operations

Alarms should identify the affected area, likely cause and safe recovery action. Decide which events belong in the PLC, sorter controller, WCS or WMS and how timestamps are synchronized.

Provide role-based access, change logging, backups and a documented recovery process. Remote support should be governed by the customer's security requirements.

Test interfaces before site peak

Build test cases for normal routing, no-read, duplicate, closed destination, full chute, communication loss, restart, recirculation and manual removal. Test volume as well as individual messages.

Record expected and actual results with representatives from the customer, integrator, software team and equipment supplier.
